Leh, Nov, 12: Handicraft Department organised live demonstration -cum- sale exhibition of handicrafts products in different traditional crafts of Ladakh.
The five- day exhibition, inaugurated by Hill Council Dy Chairman Tsering Sandup had wide range of products such as coppersmith, sculptors, painters, weavers, stone curving, basket weavers, potters, woodcarving, and knitting at display.
While lauding the department for organising first ever live demonstration- cum- sale exhibition to attract the youth in different handicraft field, Dy Chairman Sandup said that when the youth see the different handicrafts items being made at the exhibition site, it creates a curiosity among them to attract towards the handicrafts works. This unique handicraft work is important part of culture and tradition and responsibilities lies on every individual to safeguard them.
Terming Ladakh as rich tradition with self sustain region Sandup said that vitamin enrich Seabuckthorn, Apricot available here besides Ladakh produces world finest Pashmina products and many more natural resources are available here out of which number of souvenir can be made for tourist.
Assuring full support from Hill Development Council to promote handicraft works Sandup said that various government schemes are available and expect enough funding in UT Ladakh for the promotion of handicrafts products.
Earlier, presenting the welcome speech Assistant Director Handicraft Sonam Gurmet mentions about purpose of such exhibition to encourage more and more artisans in different handicraft so as to sustain the traditional crafts in Ladakh. He added that department has been imparting training from time to time to the craftsmen under various schemes.
Handloom Assistant Director Rinchen Namgyal said that Ladakh has been a self sustain region producing all basic requirements items in the past and he expressed his hope that after becoming UT, the department will get more funding to promote handicrafts at large scale.
All India Centre Handicraft, Assistant Director Satish, Phyang Councillor Punchok Dorjay and Igoo Councillor Tsering Paldan were also present on the occasion.
