SRINAGAR : Alleging that coalition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Jammu and Kashmir failed on all fronts, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said flood victims are on roads and there is no ration, power and condition of roads is very bad.
Taking a dig at Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on the arrest of hardline Hurriyat Conference leader Masrat Alam under the Public Safety Act (PSA), the working president of the main opposition National Conference said when he put him in jail, the PDP leaders criticised them.
He said there was governance visible on the ground as people were facing shortage of essentials, including rice and power situation had worsened after this government took over.
”We submitted a report to the Centre demanding Rs 44000 crore compensation for flood victims. But this government has failed to pursue the matter with the result the flood victims, including traders, were on roads demanding compensation. Look at the condition of roads in the valley, including the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, he said.
He said the NC will oppose the new recruitment policy of the government as it was injustice to youths.
”When we announced the recruitment policy for youths, it was opposed by the PDP before it came to power,” Mr Abdullah said adding they withdrew the policy later. Now PDP-BJP was in power and introduced this policy which they oppose when they were in the opposition, he said.
”We were criticized by the PDP for arresting Masrat under PSA. We kept him in Srinagar jail while PDP arrested him under same act but shifted him to Jammu.” Mr Abdullah has asked the Srinagar Block Presidents and Halqa Presidents of the party to work in close coordination and as a team in their efforts to strengthen the party’s grass roots network.
“You should leave no stone unturned to reach out to the people of your specific areas and should serve them with utmost dedication and honesty. As the principal opposition party it is our duty and responsibility to fight for the rights of our people. We have seen how PDP sold out to the BJP for the petty trappings of power and this development has put a very onerous responsibility on our shoulders,” he alleged.
”National Conference has to fight for the dignity of our people and defeat those forces that infiltrated into Srinagar only to shamelessly surrender in front of the BJP”, he said, adding. “We have to be active and dynamic in holding the Government accountable and in highlighting all issues of public concern with alacrity.
