Jhelum flows below danger mark, flood alert continues in J&K

SRINAGAR :  The flood situation in Jammu and Kashmir has further improved and the water level in the river Jhelum and its tributaries, which were at spate during the past two days, was flowing three feet to ten feet below danger mark.    Srinagar received light showers last night and intermittent rain has been lashing the summer capital since early this morning.
People continued to live in fear because of forecast for more heavy to very rain till April 4 in the valley.    The authorities have not withdrawn the flood alert despite improvement in the water level.
An official for the Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) told.
this morning that water level in Jhelum and its tributaries has witnessed further decrease after it was flowing several feet above danger mark during the past few days following heavy rain.    However, he said, water level was being monitored closely at places which are known for breaches.    He said at Sangam in south Kashmir on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the water level at 0900 hrs was 11.70 feet, about ten feet below danger mark.
He said Ram Munshi Bagh in the city recorded 15.35 feet water level at 0900 hrs, about three feet below danger mark.    Similarly, at Asham downstream in Bandipora, the water level at 0900 hrs was 11.16 feet, more than two feet below danger mark.    However, a number of low-lying areas in the city and other parts of the Valley remained inundated due to flood water.    Residents at Bemina colony in Srinagar alleged that authorities have not taken any measures as their houses remained waterlogged for the past three days.    The government has already announced flood warning in the valley and sought assistance from the Army to meet any eventuality.
A number of NDRF team have already arrived here to conduct rescue operation in case of emergency.    Authorities have set up Control Rooms at all district headquarters and Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar to take calls from the general public about flood situation.    Jammu and Kashmir police has also deployed its personnel, including officers on the river bunds to keep a close watch on water level.
