JAMMU, Mar 18: After participating in the mega rally at national capital yesterday, jewellers continued their indefinite strike here for the 17th consecutive day today, in protest against the proposed one per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery.
Over 25,000 jewellery shops and establishments in the State are shut since March 2 after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget announced one per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery.
Large number of jewellers, swarnkars and karigars assembled at Jain Bazaar here and staged protest. Demanding roll back of the excise duty decision, they raised slogans against the Central Government and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
While speaking, Raman Suri, Chairman, Sarafa Association and Swarnkar Sangh Joint Action Committee briefed the gathering about the rally held at Ram Leela Maidan, New Delhi yesterday. He added that rally created history as around four lakh jewellers and swarnkars took part in it.
Raj Kumar Babber, All India Vice President Swarnkar Sangh and President Swarnkar Sangh Jammu Province hoped that the in view of the ongoing indefinite strike, customers would face difficulties as wedding season is fast approaching and the Government should revoke the excise duty decision at the earliest.
