SRINAGAR, June 28 : A militant was killed in a gun battle that broke out at Gund Checkpora area of Kanipora, Nowgam in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district early today.
A joint team of Army’s 50 RR, SOG and CRPF cordoned off Gund Checkpora area of Kanipora, Nowgam late last night after reports about presence of militants hiding in the village.

As the joint team intensified searches at around 3.15 am, the hiding militants opened fire on the troops and hurled grenade The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter.
One militant was killed in the encounter and he has been identified as Zarar of Pakistan.
Police said that as per our records he was affiliated with JeM and was wanted by law for his complicity in militancy including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities.
According to the police records, he was part of groups involved in planning and executing attacks in the area and many other civilian atrocities. “Several crime cases were registered against him”, police said.
“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All these materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes”, police said.
A 30-year old youth sustained critical bullet wounds near encounter site at Gund Checkpora, Kanipora Nowgam in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district was admitted in SMHS hospital here.
Locals said that the youth took to streets and clashed with security forces near encounter site and its adjoining areas including Khanpora Nowgam. Police and paramilitary CRPF used pellets, tear smoke shells and some live ammunition to disperse them resulting in minor injuries to three persons.
A protester Shabir Ahmad son of Mohammad Ashraf of Checkpora, Kanipora was admitted in SMHS hospital here. He had sustained bullet wound in his lower abdomen and was operated upon.
