JAMMU, July 17: Around 800 irate people blocked the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway for nearly two hours this morning in Digiana area  protesting against erratic power supply in their area.
The traffic on the highway was disrupted for two hours as the agitators from Jeevan Nagar area in Digiana blocked it protesting against the Power Development Department (PDD).
The protestors raising slogans against the PDD and authorities alleged that the department was not paying heed to their repeated complaints which had forced them to block the highway.
“We don’t want to create any problem, but they have forced us to resort to such means. Since last 15 days we are living without electricity. Most of the children have fallen sick. People are not able to eat properly,” a protester alleged.
He said the local transformer had developed a snag and despite the repeated pleas to concerned authorities they failed to settle the problem. The protestors warned to continue road blockade in case the power problem was not settled immediately. The road blockade also resulted into a huge traffic jam on National Highway.
However, the road blockade was later lifted with the intervention of Police team led by DySP Gandhi Nagar and other police officers who took the issue with the Executive Engineer of Electric Maintenance and other officers also. They assured the people that the transformer will be installed by today.
