SUCHETGARH, May 23: All India Jat Maha Sabha (J&K) president and former JMC Mayor Ch Manmohan Singh while raising serious concern over the discrimination being faced by the members of Jat community on account of non granting of Other Backward Classes (OBC) status to the community, has asserted that the members of the community need to initiate a joint struggle to get this significant demand fulfilled.
He raised the concern during a meeting of All India Jat Maha Sabha (AIJMS) held under his chairmanship at border village Sai Mola in Suchetgarh constituency today.
Addressing the meeting Ch Manmohan said that Jat community in 11 states of the country are enjoying status of OBC but the Jats in J&K Union Territory stand deprived of this much needed status.
Meanwhile, during the meeting, the community members also raised the issue of bandh being constructed by BSF at the border in Sai village. They said that the land earmarked for the `Bunds’ belonged to Custodian Department but the same had been allotted to Jats but the ownership rights have not been conferred on the Jat community people.
They lamented that consequently these allottees will not get the compensation for the land being used for constructing the aforesaid Bunds. They asserted that this is sheer injustice with the people of Jat community.
After giving them a keen and patient hearing Ch Manmohan said that he will arrange a meeting with the Divisional Commissioner Jammu so that steps are taken by the administration for ensuring adequate compensation to the affected people of the Jat community.
He added that till date there are several custodian lands allotted to Jat community of which the ownerships rights have not been provided to the said community members.
The community members also raised the issue of Union Govt’s announcement of Rs 25 lakh compensation to the community members out of which only Rs 5.5 lakh has been paid as the first installment of compensation. When would the next installment of the rest of amount be provided to the displaced persons, they questioned.
Others who spoke on the occasion were Sobha Singh, Sarpanch Dev Raj, Sarpanch Sarabjit Singh, Brig (Retd) Pawan Sauntra, Ch Rashpal Singh, Ch Surjeet, Baldev Singh, Master Subash and Ch Sukhdev.
