JAMMU, May 23: Indian Army celebrated Tithwal Day to commemorate capture of Tithwal Valley from Pakistan Army who had illegally entered Indian territory in 1948.
163 Infantry Brigade was tasked to advance along Kupwara – Handwara axis and cross Nastachun Pass to capture Tithwal valley. The operation commenced on May 18, 1948 and by the morning of May 23, 1948, tri- colour was hosted on Tithwal valley.
Company Havaldar Major, Piru Singh of 6 RAJRIF and Lance Naik Karam Singh were conferred with glorious Param Vir Chakra for their valour and spirit in the face of enemy. 163 Infantry Brigade earned Battle Honour of ‘TITHWAL’.
To celebrate the liberation of Tithwal Valley and honour our fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the pride of nation, Tithwal Brigade organised solemn wreath laying ceremony at Narian in Nowshera sector. A reunion of Ex- servicemen of the nearby villages was also organised to celebrate the historical day.
