AKHNOOR, Oct 2:  All India Jat Mahasabha (AIJMS) today sought OBC status for Jats living in J&K and urged the community to fight for the cause unitedly.
The issue was raised by Ch Manmohan Singh, Ex-Mayor JMC, while chairing a meeting of AIJMS held at Kuldeep Eye Care centre Akhnoor arranged by Kuldeep Kour, president AIJMS Akhnoor. The meeting was attended by Mahasabha’s office bearers of Tehsil Akhnoor, Jourian and Khour besides several prominent people of the Jat community and others.
The participants observed two minutes’ silence in the memory of Vijay Choudhary (Corporator) and wife of Manmohan Chodhary.
Later, Tehsil president Akhnoor Kuldeep Kour threw light on the life history and contribution of Vijay Choudhary.
Paying tributes, Kuldeep Kour said that though she is not with us today but her contribution towards society and ideals will guide us all in the times to come. She said that the void created due to the demise of Vijay Choudhary is irreparable and will never be filled again. She appealed to Ch Manmohan Singh to lead the community towards new heights of success.
Consequently, the speakers in the meeting raised various issues of the community including the demand for OBC status for the community. They said that after abrogation of Article 370, all the laws which are valid across the country should also be implemented in J&K and under this principle the Jats are eligible for OBC status.
Upon this, Ch Manmohan said that the need of time is to show solidarity on the issue and become one voice. He said that soon he will visit all the Tehsils to disseminate the information on advantages of OBC status to Jats to unite the community.
The participants of the meeting also raised the issue of Jat Community Hall at Akhnoor.
Ch Manmohan Singh gave time of three months to Tehsil presidents and vice president to identify land for the purpose.
Reiterating demand for OBC status, Ch Manmohan Singh warned the administration of massive agitation in the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. He appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene in the matter and give the nod to OBC status to Jats in Jammu and Kashmir as the file regarding the case is already lying in the Civil Secretariat.
Pardeep Choudhary was appointed as Youth president AIJMS Khour. He was given responsibility of constituting the youth committee for Khour in consultation with Tehsil president.
