Srinagar ranked 32nd in ‘million plus cities category’

JAMMU, July 17: In a significant achievement under the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, the cities of Jammu and Kargil have been named as the “Promising Swachh Shehars” of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) also earned the prestigious Garbage Free City (GFC) 3-star rating, secured the ODF++ certification and 42nd ranking among the top 100 cities in India in the category of 3-10 lakh population. Last year, the city was ranked 248th.
Similarly, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (JMC) secured the 32nd rank in the “Million Plus Cities Category”, while the Beerwah Municipal Committee in Budgam district earned a 1-Star rating in the Small Cities category. Last year, Srinagar was ranked 234th.
The rankings were announced today by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, based on a detailed survey conducted in April and May 2025, with President Droupadi Murmu presenting the awards to the representatives of the winning cities.
On behalf of JMC, the award was received by Dr Devansh Yadav, Mission Director, SBM (J&K), Abdul Star, Joint Commissioner (Health and Sanitation), and Dr Vinod Sharma, Health Officer, Jammu Municipal Corporation.
According to the Survey report, Indore retained the title of the country’s “cleanest city” for the record eighth time in the category of more than 10 lakh population in the “Super Swachh League”, followed by Gujarat’s Surat, Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai, and Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada.
In the category of 3-10 lakh population, Noida in Uttar Pradesh was adjudged the cleanest, followed by Chandigarh, Karnataka’s Mysuru, Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, and Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur.
In the “Swachh Shehar” category with more than 10 lakh population, Ahmedabad in Gujarat was ranked the cleanest, followed by Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.
In the 3-10 lakh population category, Maharashtra’s Mira Bhayandar was ranked the cleanest, followed by Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.
Both Jammu and Kargil were adjudged “Promising Swachh Shehars” of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh among 34 cities from 33 States and Union Territories of the country, recognising their excellence in urban cleanliness and sustainable development.
The State of Assam earned the unique distinction of having two of its cities—North Lakhimpur and Guwahati—figuring in the list of Promising Swachh Shehars.
Besides featuring in the list of Swachh Shehars, Jammu Municipal Corporation earned the prestigious Garbage Free City (GFC) 3-star rating, secured ODF++ certification, and improved its ranking to 42nd among the top 100 cities in India (3-10 lakh population category) in Swachh Survekshan 2024.
According to a statement issued by the Jammu Municipal Corporation, these achievements were announced during the Swachh Survekshan Award Ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where the awards were presented by the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, in the presence of senior dignitaries.
Notably, JMC has made remarkable progress by improving its rank from 248 in 2023 to 42 in 2024.
Across Jammu and Kashmir, other Urban Local Bodies also performed well, with Srinagar Municipal Corporation securing rank 32 in the Million Plus Category, Beerwah Municipal Committee earning a 1-Star rating in the Small Cities category, and all other Urban Local Bodies in J&K getting ODF+ certification, highlighting improved sanitation and open defecation-free status.
Last year, Katra town in Jammu province was honoured as the “best clean city within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir” with a population of less than one lakh, while Jammu had slipped to 248 rank and Srinagar to 234 rank.
