Jammu cartoonist awarded in Caricature Contest in Mumbai

JAMMU, Dec 19:  Son of the soil and noted cartoonist Chander Shekhar, who has already created a niche for himself in the arena of cartoons and caricatures has once again proved his mettle by winning another prestigious award in the National level Caricature Contest organized by CCWA Mumbai and PL Deshpandey Maharashtra.
The contest was inaugurated at PL Deshpandey Kala Academy’s Art gallery and MNS chief Raj Thackeray was the chief guest at the award conferring function held last evening.
Shekhar’s eloquent caricature of legendary novelist and critic Khushwant Singh won him the award from amongst 800 entries received from across the nation sketching numerous personalities belonging to various fields and walks of life.
The jury team comprised of Sanjeev Wairkar (leading animator), Abid Surti (freelance cartoonist-writer) and Prabhakar Wairkar (Chairman CCWA Mumbai) and had a tough time in selecting the awardees in view of uniformly excellent entries. Only 80 entries were shortlisted to select the six awardees.
It is pertinent to mention here that Chander Shekhar has already a number of awards and recognitions to his credit. The most prestigious one being the one received by him from the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee during an international cartoon exhibition organized to pay tributes to luminary from the field of cartoons, RK Laxman.
Shekhar has also to his credit exemplary participation in innumerable prestigious exhibitions including the 100th year of Charlie Chaplin and Maya Kamath cartoon exhibition where his works received great appreciation especially for his unique style of depicting most serious situations with a terrific blend of wit and satire.
