Jamaat leader dies in UP jail

SRINAGAR, Dec 22: A Jamaat-i-Islamia leader booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) in July this year died in a jail in Uttar Pradesh (UP) today.
Ghulam Mohammed Bhat, 65, a resident of Kulangam in Handwara in North Kashmir, was detained under the PSA in July this year prior to the abrogation of Article 370 of Constitution.
The PSA slapped on Bhat, an active member of the banned Jamaat-i-Islamia, was to end on January 9 next year.
A senior police officer said that Bhat was suffering from various ailments and breathed his last at the Naini central jail on Saturday at 4 pm. His body was airlifted, brought here and handed over to the family for burial.
He was buried at his native village Bunpora Kulangam in Handwara area of Kupwara district this evening.
Two cases -one in 2016 and another this year -were registered against him under various Sections of the law including those under the Anti-Terror Law Unlawful (Activities) Prevention Act.
Around 400 people including political, religious leaders, lawyers were booked under PSA and were shifted out of the Kashmir valley post August 5 and lodged in various jails of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
