Jaishankar in Bhutan; discusses bilateral, regional issues

NEW DELHI: Key bilateral and regional issues were discussed in meetings Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar had with top Bhutanese leaders during his ongoing visit to Bhutan which comes just over a month after the end of the bitter military face-off between India and China at Dokalam.

The foreign secretary, who began his four-day visit to the Himalayan nation on Monday, met King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Foreign Minister Damcho Dorji, besides holding wide-ranging talks with his counterpart Dasho Sonam Tshong, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

This is the first high-level visit from India after the end of the standoff between Indian and Chinese armies at Dokalam, a strategically key area at the Bhutan-India-China tri-junction in the Sikkim sector.

The MEA said besides holding wide-ranging discussions on boosting bilateral cooperation, the two sides also “shared their perspective on regional and other issues of mutual interest”.

Asked whether the Dokalam standoff figured in the talks, the MEA officials refused to comment. (AGENCIES)
