Jail inmate commits suicide

JAMMU, Mar 23: The security of inmates lodged in different jails of Jammu province has become a cause of concern as an inmate of Central Jail Kot Bhalwal, who was awarded life imprisonment for murdering his wife eight years back allegedly, committed suicide by hanging himself in the Central Jail premises today.
As per police sources, an inmate namely Ganesh Dutt, son of Bishan Dass, resident of Dansal was found hanging inside Kot Bhalwal Central Jail today.
The inmate was a murder accused and was awarded life imprisonment eight years ago for killing his wife.
No suicide note or any incriminating material was recovered from the site of incident.
The body has been kept in the mortuary of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for postmortem, which will be conducted tomorrow as no one from the family of the deceased came here to take the body.
The matter is being investigated under relevant Sections.
It is to mention that, this is the second incident of hanging of the inmates in the jails of Jammu province in the past one month as on February 22, a Pakistani inmate namely Showkat Ali, son of Barkat Ali, a resident of Sialkote, Pakistan allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from an iron grill inside his barrack in district jail Ambphalla.
He was lodged in the jail since 2011 under Foreigners Act and was arrested by the Police from Arnia Sector along Indo-Pak international border.
On March 20, a Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) resident namely Ishtiaq Ahmed had swallowed a blade in the district jail, Poonch under mysterious circumstances.
Ahmed was arrested around three months back for crossing the border and was lodged in District Jail Poonch since then.
The rising incidents of suicides and attempts to commit suicides by inmates in the jails of Jammu have raised many questions on the security of the inmates, sources said.
