RAMBAN, Dec 24: An Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) trooper was killed and 35 others including driver were injured when a bus carrying them skidded off the road and fell into a gorge along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
The ill-fated vehicle bearing registration number JK04-5369 was on its way to Jammu from Srinagar, when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it plunged into gorge near Khooni Nallah on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, resulting into on the spot death of one ITBP trooper and injuries to 34 others. After getting information, police team rushed to the spot and started rescue operation with the help of locals, Quick Rescue Team (QRT) and Army personnel.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ramban Showkat Aijaz Bhat, SSP Ramban Anita Sharma and Additional SP Ramban Sanjay Parihar also reached the spot and supervised the rescue operation.
All the injured persons were rushed to District Hospital (DH) Ramban, from where nine injured jawans were airlifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu and 2 others were referred to Dental College Jammu by road.
The vehicle was part of a Jammu-bound convoy of 32 Battalion ITBP, which was on its way to Jammu after performing duties in poll bound areas of Srinagar.
The deceased has been identified as Constable Mohammad Ahmed Ali, while the injured have been identified as Constable Amit Kumar, Head Constable Mohinder Singh, Constable Rajinder Singh, Constable Kamlesh Kumar, Constable Sheesh Ram, Head Constable Mehfooz Khan, Head Constable Tej Singh, Constable Sunil Kumar Rawat, Constable Sohan Singh, Constable Mohinder Kumar, ASI Nar Singh, ASI Santosh Kumar, Nazir Ahmed (driver), Head Constable Arun Kumar, Constable Mohammad Anees Ansari, Constable Rakesh Kumar, Constable Pardep Kumar, Head Constable Sandeep Singh, Constable Ankit Kumar, Constable Sajan, Head Constable L Murli, Constable Satish Kumar, Constable Rajinder Kumar, Constable V Suresh, Constable Dharmendra Singh, SI Ashok, Constable Ankur Tomar, Constable Rajinder Yadav, Constable Nawal Kishore, Constable Sudhanshu, Constable Suresh Kumar, Head Constable Tej Singh, Constable Ajmal Summaiya, Constable Rajesh Kumar and Head Constable Sunil Kumar.
A case under relevant sections has been registered at Ramban Police Station and investigation started.
Meanwhile, Alok Kumar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Traffic J&K along with Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range Bhim Sen Tuti inspected the accident spot near Khooni Nallah where this ill fated bus met with an accident.
IGP Traffic conducted a meeting of all the stakeholders including DC Ramban, SSP Ramban and SSP Traffic NHW Ramban. He stressed on the agencies involved in the process of widening of NHW to expedite the work and also to repair potholes and rough patches on priority basis.
He further gave directions to the officers to identify the vulnerable places and get installed crash barriers and other road safety measures in order to reduce risk of accidents and loss of precious lives.
The IGP stressed upon the SSP Traffic NHW Ramban and SSP Ramban to make all efforts in synergy to reduce traffic congestion on NHW and ensure smooth flow of traffic.
He also gave direction to the officers to widely publicize the contact numbers of Traffic Control Units for convenience of the general public.
