Ishrat encounter: accsused get copies of charge sheet

AHMEDABAD, July 15:  A Special CBI court today handed over to five accused a copy of the charge sheet filed by the CBI earlier this month in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

Five of the accused including senior police officer GL Singhal,JG Parmar, Tarun Barot, Bharat Patel and commando Anaju Chaudhary appeared before the court as per the summons issued by the court last week. The court handed over a copy of the chargesheet to each of the accused.

Supended DIG DG Vanzara, one of the accused has already received the charge sheet whereas Additional DGP PP Pandey and DSP NK Amin are yet to receive it.

In the charge sheet, filed on July 3, the CBI has said Ishrat, a 19-year-old Mumbai college girl and three others were killed near by Gujarat police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004 in a staged encounter.

The probe agency said it was a joint operation between the Gujarat police and the Intelligence Bureau. The CBI has named eight police officers in the charge sheet.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his junior and former minister Amit Shah has not been named. Senior IB officer Rajinder Kumar has also not been named in the charge sheet.

After gunning down Ishrat and three others, the Gujarat police had claimed that they were Laskher-e-Toiba terrorists who were out to kill Mr Modi. (UNI)
