I am surprised after reading the news ‘Rehabilitation of affected families in Udhampur district’ DE Sep 17 that Dy. Development Commissioner, Udhampur, has invited an expert team of Geologist from Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun and Geology Dept. of Jammu University. It is to bring to your notice and all concerned depts. including DDC Udhampur that Geological survey of India is the only dept. which has been carrying out such type of studies all over India and in other countries since nineteenth century, besides preparing geological maps on different scales of entire India, There are many wings in GSI to carry out different types of works. Among these wings, Engineering Geology wing is the most important which has been carrying out detailed studies of landslides, earthquakes area besides attending all hydel, irrigation, communication and other miscellaneous Projects all over India including J & K State. There is no other dept. in India which carries studies for land slide, earthquakes and other related problems. Beside GSI, almost every state has Geology and Mining dept. and other Geologist are kept for helping in construction of irrigation and hydel projects but their work is restricted within their dept. With due regards to the Geologists of Wadia institute of Geology and Research Scholars of Jammu university, I am to inform that these geologists / Research Scholars have been doing some research work in their areas and for that they get money from Department of Science and Technology but they cannot be expert in this type of work. A Geologist/ Engineer/ Sciencetist cannot be an expert unless he gets the training under an “Expert Guru”.
By working at different similar projects in various states and discussing the problems with design engineers, yes any Geologist of Wadia Institute of Geology or Research scholar of Geology department or Geologist of other departments can go and study the problems to enhance their knowledge but they cannot be expert.
