Intl’ cooperation required to check global warming: Abdullah

NEW DELHI, Dec 11:

Union minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah today said international cooperation was required to bring down carbon emissions while holding the West responsible for global warming.

“Today, the west is responsible if there is global warming, we are not responsible,” Abdullah said, adding that the emissions by India were hardly anything compared to those of the Western world.

“But as you see for yourself, it is not so easy for them to bring their emissions down. We keep on telling them but we fail,” he said.

Abdullah said the world will have to pay the price if steps were not taken fast to bring down global warming, adding that it was important to preserve what we have.

Speaking at the Delhi Clean Energy Conference here, Abdullah said that some countries had made more progress in harnessing clean energy and others could benefit from that.

He said that he had asked officials of his own ministry to visit Italy to study a clean energy electricity generating plant there.

He said India was hugely dependent on other countries for its energy requirements so it was important that the country benefited from its renewable sources of energy.

Progress had been made in the use of Wind energy and the country could go on to become the world number one nation in this sector, Abdullah said. (AGENCIES)
