International conference on role of ORSI kicks off at KU

A souvenir being released during inaugural of three-day international conference at KU on Monday.

SRINAGAR, Oct 21: A three-day international conference on role of Operational Research Society of India (ORSI) began at University of Kashmir (KU) to promote and propagate the application of Operational Research (OR) for Data Analytics and Decision Analysis in various sphere of life,
Vice Chancellor KU Prof Talat Ahmad, who delivered the inaugural speech, said that it would provide rich experience to the participants and help them in understanding and realizing the importance of OR for data analytics and decision analysis in research and other academic pursuits.
Prof Talat said: “The International Conference should bring out innovative ways of learning operational research so that students choose statistics and mathematics as their subjects out of their own sweet will rather than being scared of these.”
Prof PR Reddy, President ORSI, who was guest of honor on the occasion, said that operations research has developed into a multi-disciplinary research now and has paved way for great innovations and ideas.
Prof SP Mukherjee, former Vice President International Federation of Operations Research Societies, said that economic development is the bed-rock of any inclusive development and constraint optimization needs to be negotiated at all levels to ensure maximization of profits and minimization of losses by utilizing cost-effective tools which consume less energy and puts less burden of the available natural resources.
Vice Chancellor Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Prof AR Trag, on the occasion said: “In modern times, impact of operational research is everywhere. OR is used as a tool for managerial decision and almost every corporate house including the financial institutions, hospitals and universities to get cost-effective results.”
Prof Trag while maintaining that the basic challenge for Asian and African countries today is to alleviate the poverty of their people and address the growing problem of shortage of food grains, proper hygiene and health care and availability of water, adding that such issues and problems could be addressed by using the tools of operational research and putting modern-day techniques of data analytics and decision-analysis into practice.
Earlier presenting the welcome address Head Department of Statistics KU and General Chair ICORDADA Prof Aquil Ahmad said that the purpose of the International Workshop and Conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in the advances and applications in the field of operations research for data analytics and decision analysis.
The conference was attended by the delegates, researchers from India and abroad and students from various colleges. On the occasion a souvenir of the ICORDADA-13 was also released.
