JAMMU, Feb 15: Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu observed International Childhood Cancer Day by organizing a program in SMGS Hospital, Jammu.
The theme for International Childhood Cancer Day for this year is “Better Survival” is Achievable #Throughtheirhands”. Administrative Secretary, Health & Medical Education (H&ME) Department, Bhupinder Kumar, was the chief guest of the program.
On the occasion, Bhupinder Kumar inaugurated the upgraded Pediatric Hematology Oncology Ward in SMGS Hospital, Jammu, which is recently renovated and developed for the cancer patients with the additional facilities.
While speaking on this occasion, Kumar said that no child with cancer should be left without treatment. He emphasized the need of strengthening the medical services to control NCDs (Non Communicable Diseases) including cancers and developing the mechanism to make cancer care as well as palliative care facilities accessible even in peripheral areas.
Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma (Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu) encouraged the children with cancer and their parents to continue and complete their treatment.
On the occasion, a painting competition was organized, in which the survivors and the children with cancer participated. It was followed by cultural activities and a magic show. The chief guest distributed gifts amongst the children.
The Administrative Secretary also honoured individual supporters and representatives of supporting NGOs i.e. Poonam Sethi, Benu Lakra and others from Sparkle Club Jammu, Dr Navneet Kour from NGO Support and NHR-SJC India, Dr Pooja Kawte from Hope and Suruchi Sharma from Cankids.
HoDs and faculty members of several departments of GMC Jammu, besides medical superintendent of SMGS Hospital were also present on the occasion.
