The ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY)-2024 has witnessed remarkable advancements in providing healthcare to pilgrims, thanks to the introduction of the ‘Pony Ambulance’ service. This novel initiative has already treated over 1200 Yatris, significantly enhancing the safety and well-being of participants. The healthcare authorities have displayed commendable foresight and ingenuity in deploying these horse-mounted emergency response teams, which have proved to be a lifesaver in the challenging terrains of Baltal and Pahalgam. The Pony Ambulance service, equipped with medical kits and oxygen cylinders, is an exemplary model of delivering critical healthcare support in remote and difficult-to-reach areas. The swift response and immediate care provided by trained personnel have not only alleviated health issues but also significantly reduced morbidity and mortality rates among the pilgrims. The deployment of 52 such teams, 22 from Baltal and 30 from Pahalgam, underscores the meticulous planning and execution by the health authorities.
This innovative initiative highlights the importance of adaptive solutions in healthcare delivery. The Pony Ambulance Service has garnered widespread appreciation from yatris, who recognise its critical role in ensuring a safe pilgrimage. The initiative sets a precedent for other regions with similar geographical challenges to explore and implement customised healthcare solutions. Beyond the Pony Ambulance Service, the overall healthcare response during FY 2024 has been commendable. Over 1 lakh yatris have been attended to in the OPD, with a balanced distribution between the Baltal and Pahalgam sides. The comprehensive and proactive approach during SANJY-2024 stands as a testament to the dedication and commitment to the well-being of pilgrims. The success of the Pony Ambulance Service and the overall healthcare management should serve as inspiration for future yatras and similar events globally. It demonstrates that, with innovative thinking and strategic planning, even the most challenging environments can be navigated to ensure the health and safety of individuals. This year’s yatra has set a new benchmark for providing holistic care, making the pilgrimage not just a spiritual journey but also a safer and healthier one.
