This time it is the Minister of Industries who has taken the lid off the 100-crore scam in JK Cements Ltd. It is something rare for a Minister to do so because normally only outside agencies like media or NGO or PIL bring such big scams to the limelight. Both branches of the PSU, namely Bari Brahmana in Jammu and Khrew in Pulwama are under scanner for scandalous activity. Purchase of machinery at abnormally high rate, purchase of sub-standard raw material, carelessness in pollution control and degradation of environment etc. have been detected by the departmental committee constituted under the orders of the Minister.
The Chief Minister has taken the right decision of handing over the scam case to the State Vigilance Organization and at the same time Government has been asked to file FIR with the local police headquarter against the J&K Cements Ltd. Deficits to the tune of 16 crore rupees have also been detected. With the filing of FIR, serving as well as retired officers and functionaries of the PSU will be examined and they will have to answer for the irregularities that will be established by the Vigilance Commission.
How sad that a PSU once running in comfortable profit has been ruined by corrupt and immoral persons at the helm of its affairs. It is producing sub-standard cement and its credibility has received a serious blow. On one hand, the Government is willing to provide all incentives and facilities to help industries expand in the State and on the other we find the sordid condition of the PSU. Vigilance Organization is expected to probe into the scam expeditiously and contribute to bringing the culprit to book.
