Indians kidnapped in Iraq

Although the event of kidnapping of 40 Indian workers in Mosul, and 46 Indian nurses getting stranded in the Iraqi town of Tikrit is very critical, yet the need of the hour is to make all efforts and tap all possible sources of seeking their release without harm instead of panicking and rushing from pillar to post. The External Affairs Ministry is in continuous contact with the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq and the Red Crescent and other agencies to ensure safety of all of them. Iraq is in the grip of civil and sectarian war between the Sunni Al Qaeda militants and the local Government. Indians are not taken hostage for any political reason. They are ordinary workers who were contributing to the development of Iraq by working with Al Huda Company. It is also the responsibility of this Company to negotiate the release of Indian nationals with safety. New Delhi should also talk to the OIC and the Saudi Government to play their role in seeking safe release of Indian citizens.
