After completing its physical visit to Pakistani jails, the Indo-Pak Judicial Committee has reported that 20 out of a total number of 36 Indian prisoners languishing in the notorious Kot Lakhpat jail in Pakistan are mentally sick. International law and humanism demand that the mentally sick and disabled prisoners have to be kept in special hospitals for treatment. This is not the case with the Indian prisoners. Two things are of vital importance. On that the lists of prisoners from each country are updated and nobody is left out of the lists that are exchanged. Second point is that the prisoners should have the right of access to their respective consulates. We would suggest that the Judicial Committee gives due importance to the factor of compassion and humanism in the cases of these prisoners. Any act of compassion will bring the two countries a step closer to each other.
