Indian among 5 jailed in Brunei for immigration offences

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 23 : An Indian senior citizen is among five foreigners jailed in Brunei and fined for immigration violations, according to the Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) of Brunei Darussalam.
According to the INRD, the 60-year-old Indian national was sentenced to six months in prison for overstaying.
Besides, a 64-year-old Filipino was sentenced to nine months in prison and fined an 800 Brunei dollars (590 U.S. dollars) fine in lieu of whipping for overstaying. The man failed to pay the fine and had his imprisonment extended to 10 months, the local daily Borneo Bulletin reported on Wednesday.
In another case, three Indonesians were arrested and sentenced to prison, including a 50-year-old man received a final sentence of six months in prison, and the other two sentenced to two-year imprisonment and three whippings for conspiring to help the 50-year-old leave the country illegally. (UNI)
