India moving in right direction in ensuring food to everyone: UN

NEW DELHI, July 4: The Supreme Court riding high on constitutional provisions in compelling Governments to ensure basic necessities of life especially food, is commendable, a UN official said here today.
The country’s Food Security Ordinance has global significance and would inspire many countries to come up with similar legislation, Olivier De Schutter, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food said.
“I believe it is an important movement for the Right to Food in India. It can inspire many countries to do the same thing,” he said adding “what this bill will do is it will protect as a legal right what otherwise are simply benefits given away as charity by the Government. I think it is of great and symbolic significance.”
Professor Schutter, who is preparing a report on world food security and is in India to study the country’s food law, said he would use India’s example in his report to be submitted in the UN soon.
He refuted opinion that hunger was a natural disaster saying it was a result of political choices and can be tackled with sincere efforts.
“It’s a battle which should be fought and won,” he said adding it’s a huge task the world over and can be done by implementing and initiating various programmes and laws in this direction.(PTI)
