India and Turkey agree to enhance bilateral trade in farm products

NEW DELHI, Dec 18:
India and Turkey on Tuesday agreed on a Work Plan to enhance bilateral trade in agricultural products including fruits and vegetables.
Endorsing the Plan during a bilateral meeting here with the visiting Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh said that both sides needed to prioritise sectors for cooperation and identify nodal officers for further progress.
He also called for larger cooperation between the two countries through greater interaction among government agricultural institutions, experts, scientists and agro business.
The Work Plan is based on the first meeting of the Steering Committee held in India in 2010.
As part of the Work Plan, there will be exchange of business delegations including companies from agriculture sector between the two countries for collaboration in areas of common interest.
On the occasion, the Minister said the government had resolved to double farmers’ income by 2022 through a series of focused programmes including Soil Health Card, organic farming, crop insurance, irrigation, e-NAM and focus on strengthening post-harvest management.
Asserting that India had made tremendous progress in agriculture and allied sectors in the last few years, he said, “ The country has achieved food security and become a net exporter of agriculture commodities.” (UNI)
