Various airlines are showing keen interest in increasing daily air flights in and out of two airports of the State, Jammu and Srinagar. They want to cope with the heavy rush of passengers in the light of improved law and order conditions and the eagerness of people to visit the State. However, both the airports are under the control of IAF for security reasons. Therefore, the consent of the IAF has to be obtained before the number of flights can be increased.
Aviation regulator DGCA has written to the IAF for increasing the flights from eight to twelve per day and the consent of the IAF is awaited. We would be happy that the number of daily flights to the two capital cities is increased as that would mean more chances for passengers to book tickets even at short notices. Indeed, the movement of people has increased fairly well either owing to business purposes or official trips or for purpose of tourism. The airlines should respond to the need of the people and they have done so. It has to be remembered that Srinagar airport has already been upgraded and expanded and the Jammu airport is also under active process of expansion after the dispute with the army over the additional space was overcome. Therefore the airlines can now have the facility of flying more flights in and out of these two cities. This will be indirect support to the tourism and business enterprises in both parts of the State. We would also like that the flights to Leh and Kargil should also be increased so that the people in those far off areas do not face the difficulty of transportation especially in bad weather.
