Sir,
Over the past some time, the reports of our youth committing suicides have been appearing in newspapers. These reports are a matter of concern as the youth are the future custodions of our country. They need to be brought up and groomed in such a manner that they make use of all their ability and potential to grow as responsible and patriotic citizens with qualities of leadership, perseverance and strong convictions deeply ingrained in them in order to propel this country to Himalayan heights of prosperity and progress.
Thus, there is need to probe the reasons which lead them to end their lives in the prime of their life. The students may commit suicides because of failures in the examinations or not being able to secure the expected marks.Often parents pin high and unrealistic hopes on their children which, if unfulfilled, result in them taking to the extreme step.Failure to get jobs after the completion of education may also trigger suicidal tendencies in the youth.Sexual harrassment or exploitation may also provoke the youth to end their lives. There are also incidents of young housewives committing suicides after being harrassed and tortured by the inlaws for dowry or due to some other marital discord. The young men and women may also choose to commit suicide out of frustration in broken love affair.
Whatever be the reason, increase in the incidents of suicides is a matter of concern and the Government, civil society and intelligensia ought to think of measures to be adopted in schools, homes and workplaces for prevention of such acts. The Government ought to appoint counsellors at zonal and district level to provide counselling to the students at the time of exams or post exams. There is also need to open more fast track courts to decide cases related to crime against women and award exemplary punishment to the guilty to check crime against women.
Yours etc…
