Improving polling system

A close study of the history of our democracy will show that among other things the Chief Election Commission of India has been deeply interested in bringing about modernization in the system of elections in the country. More and more reforms are being introduced and with two major aims. One is that all arrangements that facilitate the voters to cast their vote are made available and the second is that the system is updated and modified so that polling becomes efficient, transparent and fair. In this context one can recall the introduction of electronic voting machines a couple of years earlier. It has brought about sea change in the efficiency, promptness and absolute fairness to the entire system.
A recent order issued by the CEC of India says that no polling station will have more than 1400 voters in urban booths and 12oo voters in rural booths. The new rule will come into force immediately. We highly appreciate the wisdom of the Election Commission of India in bringing about this rule to reduce the crowding at the polling booths and to ensure that efficiency is not put at stake. Moreover, the Commission has introduced the vote verifying mechanism with the help of which the voter can see that his vote has been cast against the symbol of the party to which he wanted to cast the vote. But he will see it just in seven seconds to ensure that his vote has been properly cast.  The voter verified paper audit trail is a machine which dispenses a slip with the symbol of the party for which a person has voted for.
We warmly welcome the new rule ordered by the Election Commission because owing to crowds gathering at the polling stations, there is always the apprehension of some unruly things happening. The new rules will reduce the chances of acrimony at the polling stations. We welcome any new and progressive reform brought about by the Election Commission of India. We appreciate its objective that polling should be without any bad incidents and that everybody eligible to vote should get his turn in normal course to cast his vote.
