JAMMU, Nov 1: Mainta-ining age old religious tradition, an impressive Nagar Kirtan was taken out in City of Temples by members of Sikh community on the eve of 548th Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj which falls on November 4 (Kartik Purnima).

Thousands of Sikh devotees, including the students of over one dozen schools along with bands, besides a sizable number of women and children participated in the Nagar Kirtan which started from Gurudwara Yadgar, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Chand Nagar here in the morning and culminated at Gurudwara, Singh Sabha, Nanak Nagar in the evening.
The Nagar Kirtan was organized by District Gurudwara Prabandak Committee, (DGPC) Jammu, headed by Trilochan Singh Wazir. The Nagar Kirtan passed via Vinayak Bazar, Dogra Chowk, Tawi bridge, Asia Chowk, Gandhi Nagar, Gole Market before culminating at Gurdwara Singh Sabha Nanak Nagar.
The devotees’ enroute were reciting Shabad Kirtan and Gurbani. The Palki of Guru Sahib was fully decorated with flowers and it was pulled by Panj Piaras attired in traditional Khalsa dresses.
The devotees were sweeping the road where from the Palki of Guru Sahib had to proceed right from Gurudwara Nanak Dev Ji, Chand Nagar up to Gurudwara Singh Sabha Nanak Nagar. There was lot of religious enthusiasm and charm among the devotees.
The community youth enroute displayed the traditional martial art while the school children were also reciting Gurbani.
The Ragi Jathas from Punjab and other places participated in the Nagar Kirtan while the religious discourses were given by Bhai Amrek Singh Ji from Chandigarh.
He threw light on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. He said Guru Nanak considered entire humanity as one and for him there was no difference among the human beings on the basis of their caste, colour, region or religion. He gave the message of truth, brotherhood and humanity to entire universe. He said for Guru Nanak, entire humanity is children of one God and hence people should love and respect each other.
He said Guru Nanak Ji’s message is as relevant in today’s world, which is facing chaos and confusion from all sides, as it was over 500 years before when he came to this universe.
He appealed to the people to follow the path shown by Guru Nanak and other 10 Sikh Gurus, who fought for truth and righteousness.
The Nagar Kirtan was enroute welcomed by the members of other communities also and entire route was fully decorated on the occasion. The people enroute paid their obeisance to Guru Granth Sahib.
The devotees on entire route of Nagar Kirtan had installed stalls to distribute Prashad, water and other soft drinks to the people who took part in Nagar Kirtan. The administration had also made elaborate security arrangements right from Gurudwara Chand Nagar to Gurudwara Nanak Nagar and traffic was diverted to one side only to allow smooth movement of Nagar Kirtan.
