JAMMU, Nov 9: An impressive and grand Nagar Kirtan on the eve of 550th Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj was taken out amid tight security measures here today.
Despite the restrictions imposed by the Government in the State in view of verdict on Ayodhya land dispute case, hundreds of Sikh devotees including men, women and children drawn from different parts of Jammu and outskirts participated in the ‘Nagar Kirtan’ which as usual started from Gurdwara Yadgar, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Chand Nagar here.
It passed through Dogra Chowk , Tawi Bridge, Bikram Chowk, Gandhi Nagar and Gole Market before culminating at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, ‘Nanak Nagar’ in the evening. The Nagar Kirtan was organised by State Gurdwara Parbandhak Board and District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (DGPC), Jammu in which representatives of various Sikh bodies participated.

Hundreds of people enroute had made beelines to pay their obeisance to Palki carrying Guru Granth Sahib which was fully decorated. The Palki was preceded by the camel and horse riders attired in Khalsa dress displaying swords in their hands.
It was followed by Panj Piaras and various band parties. The school children from different schools were reciting Gurbani and Bhajans. They were attired in Kesri, blue and black dresses. Showing utmost respect and honour to Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Sewadars were cleaning the road where from ‘Palki’ had to pass.
The school children were chanting slogans “Vahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa Vahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh”, “Jo Bholey Sonihal Sat Sri Akal” and “Raj Kareyga Khalsa” enroute. The Sikh youth from Punjab and Jammu who played Gatka , displayed martial art and other feats enroute became the attraction of people throughout the entire Nagar Kirtan route.
The authorities had also made elaborate security arrangements for the ‘Nagar Kirtan’ in view of today’s Ayodhya verdict. A big contingent of police and CRPF personnel were escorting the ‘Nagar Kirtan’ right from Gurdwara Guru Nanak Dev Chand Nagar till its culmination. CRPF personnel were also deployed on flyover to maintain proper security.
Harpreet Singh a Pracharak from Punjab threw light on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. The langars were also organized by Sikh bodies and people participating in the Nagar Kirtan were served fruits and prashad enroute.
Meanwhile, a handout issued by Sikh United Front of J and K said that ‘Nagar Kirtan’ was taken out under the supervision of Mahant Manjit Singh Ji of Shiromani Dera Nangali Sahib, Poonch and various other Sikh organizations.
Prominent Sikh organisations who participated in the ‘Nagar Kirtan’ included Sikh United Front, J and K, Shiromani Akali Dal, J and K, Bhai Kanaya Nishkam Sewa Society, J and K, Shiromani Youth Akali Dal, Istri Akali Dal, Sikh Naujwan Sabha, Sikh Welfare Society, All India Sikh Students Federation among others.
