JAMMU, Dec 12: Institute of Mountain Environment (IME), Bhaderwah Campus, organized one day interactive workshop on ‘Mountains – key to a sustainable future’ on the eve of International Mountain Day at Bhaderwah Campus.
Prof G M Bhat, Rector Bhaderwah Campus and chief guest on the occasion, highlighted the issues and challenges the fragile mountain ecosystems are facing. While deliberating upon the natural risks and disasters in Himalayas, he threw an expert light on the history, origin and causes of the earthquakes and highlighted the precautionary measures which should be adopted during and after the earthquake. Besides, he expressed a number of novel ideas and adoptable strategies for the betterment of society especially the marginalized mountain dwellers.
Setting the context, Dr Neeraj Sharma, In-charge IME, introduced the theme and highlighted the achievements of IME.
Chhering Tandup, Assistant Professor, IME, in his presentation on climate change and impact on micro-economy of mountain region, highlighted the issues being faced by the people and livestock in Trans Himalayan region of Ladakh.
Shayan Javeed, Assistant Professor, IME presented his expert talk on climate change, vulnerability and sustainable livelihoods in mountains while Kuljit Singh, Academic Co-ordinator, Bhaderwah Campus, deliberated upon the missing links and flaws in Government policies on mountains.
Dr Neeraj Sharma spoke at length on the mountains on local, regional and trans-boundary scales.
The series of lectures was followed by an open interactive session wherein the participants shared their views and suggestions which were incorporated in the form of a resolution, and later adopted by the house.
