Imam arrested for murder

SRINAGAR, June 13: Police today arrested an Imam of a local Masjid from Srinagar’s Batmaloo area for murder of a person who was co-lover of Iman’s girl friend.
Addressing a press conference here, SSP Srinagar, Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari said that the body of the victim identified as Wali Mohammad Hajam son of Ghulam Rasool Hajam resident of Wagath-Handwara was recovered from partially earth filled plot of land at Firdousabad-Batmaloo on June 9.
“Wali Mohammad Hajam was a mason by profession and he was murdered by his acquaintance, Muneer Ahmad War. Both Wali Mohammad and Muneer were in love with a same girl living in the Batmaloo area of Srinagar city. Muneer could not digest the proximity of Wali Mohammad with the girl and made it a point to eliminate him,” said Bukhari.
He said that Wali Mohammad was murdered by Muneer during the intervening night of May 13 and 14. He said the body was dumped in a tin barrel by the accused along with his friend adding that it took the police 27 days to locate the body that was kept in the plot of land of an under constructed house.
Bukhari said that during investigations, police interrogated 50 persons and finally zeroed on the murderer and his close associate. He said the sharp edged 16 inches knife used as weapon of offence was procured by Muneer from the Bandookhar locality of the Rainawari area.
“During the investigation the police were able to zero in on Muneer Ahmad War son of Abdul Aziz War resident of Hatmulla-Kupwara at present Batmaloo and Izhar-ul-Islam son of Abdul Majeed Ganai resident of Hassanpora-Bijbehara at present Batmaloo. Muneer is an Imam and leads five times prayers in a local Masjid in the Batmaloo area. He is Hafiz and used to get Rs. 2,500 as monthly honorarium,” said Bukhari.
Bukhari said that on sustained questioning the main accused identified the site where he dumped the dead body. He said the murderer also informed the police about the modus operandi of the murder as well as the plan hatched by him. He said the weapon of offence was also recovered on the basis of identification provided by him.
“The accused and the victim were living in the same locality and were well acquainted with each other. Wali Mohammad visited the house of accused on the fateful day and on that date they too had duel about their relation with the girl. Muneer objected to the frequent visit of Wali Mohammad to the house of girl. Muneer was on look-out for Wali Mohammad and wanted to take revenge from him,” said Bukhari.
Bukhari said the incident is highly unfortunate and the society should be worried over the occurrence of such unfortunate incidents. He said the people belonging to different shades of life should keep vigil so that action is taken against the anti-social elements.
