JAMMU, Aug 8: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) organized its 28th Convocation at IGNOU Maidan Garhi, New Delhi Headquarters today and simultaneously at all its Regional Centres across the Country including Regional Centre Jammu via tele-conferencing.
Prof Hari Gautam, former Chairman, University Grants Commission was the chief guest and delivered the convocation address and Prof D P Singh, former Vice Chancellor, Lucknow University, was the distinguished guest at the New Delhi headquarters.
Convocation at Jammu was held at the Police Auditorium, Gulshan Ground on Railway Road. Prof Sudhir K Jain, Vice Chancellor, Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, was the chief guest on this occasion who awarded Degree certificates to the eligible learners. A total of 5214 learners from Regional Centre Jammu were declared successful and eligible to receive Diplomas and Degree certificates out of which 2499 are Master Degree awardees, 2072 are Bachelor Degree awardees, 539 are of Diploma programmes and 103 learners of six months Certificate programmes. As many as 302 learners of B.Ed., B.Sc. Nursing, B.Lib and Master Degree programmes were awarded Degree Certificates in the Convocation function at Jammu in person.
One of the learners namely Urmila Devi was awarded Gold Medal for her meritorious performance in Diploma in Nursing Administration (DNA) programme throughout the Country.
Prof Jain termed the 28th Convocation of IGNOU as an occasion of celebration of IGNOU’s achievements which is referred to as the people’s university accessible to all those far and wide who otherwise would have lost the opportunity to gain access to higher education, improve upon their qualification and increase the chances of employment. Prof Jain expressed that IGNOU has facilitated empowerment of marginalized sections of the society, drop-outs of conventional educational system and those who cannot afford to educate themselves because of distances and economic reasons.
Regional Director K K Bhat reported that the Regional Centre Jammu has registered a sustainable growth of enrolment consistently for the 17th admission cycle without a break and the Regional Centre Jammu has more than 33,000 learners enrolled for the year 2014 attached with different Learner Study Centres for student support services across the region and for the January 2015 admission session and RR July 2015, RC has already crossed the 27,000 mark and is confident that in 2015 Regional Centre Jammu will achieve yet another benchmark of 40,000 in terms of student enrolment.
