JAMMU, May 25: Rahul Sahai, Chairman of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Jammu Chapter, today raised the key freight and logistics issues at Business Development Unit (BDU) meeting organized by Northern Railway, here today.
The meeting was chaired by Vivek Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, Northern Railway, Jammu Division.
Other senior officials present included Uchit Singhal and Arish Bansal.
During the interaction, Rahul Sahai presented a detailed representation on behalf of ICC Jammu, highlighting critical issues related to freight movement, logistics infrastructure, and ease of doing business in Jammu & Kashmir.
He emphasized that strengthening rail connectivity and freight systems is essential for boosting economic growth, especially for industries, MSMEs, traders and agriculture-based sectors.
Sahai proposed several key measures, including scheduling freight rakes during daytime to address labour constraints, increasing unloading time from the existing 7 hours to 24 hours and waiving demurrage charges in cases of delays caused by operational challenges.
He also called for the development of goods sheds in key industrial areas such as Bari Brahmana, Samba, and Jammu, along with the early operationalisation of the Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Samba.
Additional suggestions included improved wagon availability, development of multi-modal logistics facilities, rationalisation of freight charges, digitalisation of railway freight systems and better last-mile connectivity.
The meeting witnessed active participation from freight customers, consignors, consignees, logistics operators and representatives from trade and industry.
Notable attendees included Ashish Jain and Raj Dua from ICC Jammu, Rakesh from CONCOR, and representatives from IOCL, BPCL, Adani Cements and others.
