JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Nov 27: Separate human trafficking rackets were busted in Jammu and Bandipora districts today.
A police spokesperson said that five women were detained from Bathindi area of Jammu. They were identified as Fatima (18), Sumia Akhter (14), Noora Isha (40), Asia Begum (19), and Alla Banoo (60).
He said that another woman, Fatima (age not known), was detained from Gandhi Nagar area. This woman, married in Ramban district, was supposed to sell the other five women in Kashmir in lieu of monetary gains.
Originally from Burma, the five Rohingya women were brought to Jammu from Delhi and for the past two-three days, they were putting up in Doungia area of Bathindi in Jammu.
Till the press time, no FIR was registered in the case, as the police and Central agencies were investigating the detained women.
Meanwhile, police today arrested five people, including Rohingya, in connection with a human trafficking network in Bandipora district of Kashmir.
A senior police officer said that the accused were involved in trafficking Rohingya women through Bangladesh and arranging marriages with locals within Jammu and Kashmir in exchange for monetary gains.
He said that the arrests were made after meticulous investigative efforts uncovered the illicit operation and the arrested persons include Manzoor Alam, a Rohingya national.
The officer further added the modus operandi involved exploiting vulnerable Rohingya women, transporting them through Bangladesh, and orchestrating marriages with locals in the UT. He further said that the transactional nature of these marriages suggests a distressing nexus between human trafficking and illegal financial gains.
Meanwhile, the police have taken cognizance of the matter and have started investigation.
