Eyewitnesses said the tourists staying in the houseboat were rescued safely after water began entering the structure during the early hours of the morning.
Houseboat owner Ghulam Qadir alleged that the boats deployed in the river to trace the body of a suicide victim created strong waves, causing water to enter the houseboat. According to Qadir, the waves led to water entering the houseboat, which eventually sank around 5 a.m.
The situation was further worsened by heavy rainfall and strong winds that lashed the city overnight. “We have suffered losses worth around Rs 50 lakh. We requested tents for temporary shelter, but nothing has been provided so far. We have nothing to eat or wear,” Qadir said.
Locals said police and officials reached the spot early in the morning and took stock of the situation after the incident. The affected family has appealed to the administration for immediate relief and rehabilitation assistance.
