JAMMU, Mar 26: In the wake of the continued protest by the activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishad (ABVP) over hike in the hostel fee, University of Jammu today constituted a committee of senior professors to look into the issue.
To examine in detail the various aspects of enhancement of the hostel fee so that no section of students and scholars feel aggrieved or over burden by the fee, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar has constituted a committee comprising of senior professors.
Vice-Chancellor has also instructed the various functionaries of the University to maintain law and order on the campus.
Earlier, the activists of ABVP led by its Jammu University president Ashwani Sharma continued their protest and boycotted all the departments and marched towards main gate.
The protestors closed the main gate and raised slogans in favour of their demands. They also tried to discuss the issue with the Vice Chancellor at a function in The Business School, but failed.
Addressing the protestors, Aswani Sharma alleged that the fee structure of the 7 hostels of Jammu University (one boys hostel in Old Campus and 6 in New Campus) have been increased by 200 per cent, which is injustice with the students’ community.
He informed that earlier the annual hostel fee was Rs 3,000 out of which Rs 2,200 was renewable and Rs 800 was security. But now the University administration has enhanced the annual hostel fee to Rs 5,480 out of which Rs 3,480 is renewable and Rs 2,000 is security, he informed. Other miscellaneous charges including room rent, electricity charges have been doubled, he added.
Such a steep rise in the annual hostel fee and other miscellaneous charges has created chaos and confusions among the student community, he added.
He demanded immediate roll back of the hiked hostel fee and warned to launch agitation if Varsity administration failed to do so.
