S.D. Rohmetra was a man of principles, a forward-thinker, and a determined crusader for the truth. In an era devoid of digital connectivity and real-time information, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, he carved a path of authentic journalism through sheer will, unmatched intuition, and a powerful network of social and professional contacts. When authenticated information was hard to come by, and verifying breaking stories was a challenge, S.D. Rohmetra relied on his deep interpersonal relationships, strong moral compass, and ear for news to ensure that Daily Excelsior delivered the truth-swiftly, accurately, and responsibly. What set him apart was his remarkable ability to gauge situations and adapt without ever compromising on the ethics of journalism. He read between the lines, foresaw the impact of events, and instinctively knew the direction the news cycle would take. His ability to maintain editorial balance in volatile times was nothing short of genius.
He held the line when it mattered the most-always putting the nation, the truth, and the public’s interest above all else. His unwavering belief in the foundational principles of journalism-truthfulness, public service, fairness, and accountability-defined Daily Excelsior’s editorial voice. He understood that journalism was not merely a profession; it was a responsibility. He ensured that the newspaper raised critical issues of public importance-be it infrastructure, governance, corruption, or socio-political injustice. His editorials weren’t just opinions; they were informed calls to action, often serving as catalysts for change and policy reconsiderations. The newspaper under his stewardship was not just a chronicler of events-it was an enabler of resolution and relief. His commitment to highlighting the voice of the unheard and shining a light on matters of deep concern earned him immense respect not just among the masses but also within the corridors of power.
Despite all the pressures-political, financial, and social-S.D. Rohmetra remained steadfast. His support for nationalistic values and unity never wavered. He was a staunch believer in the sovereignty and integrity of the nation and ensured that the Daily Excelsior reflected these values in its tone and tenor.
His relationship with his staff was truly special. He wasn’t just an editor-he was a mentor, a protector, and a fatherly figure. He believed in nurturing talent and encouraging exploration. Some of the finest journalists in Jammu and Kashmir today owe their foundation to the guidance and encouragement they received from him. He created an environment where curiosity was rewarded, integrity was revered, and hard work was a sacred virtue.
He invested time, vision, and resources into making Daily Excelsior a household name-not just in Jammu and Kashmir, but across the country. He was years ahead of his time, foreseeing the transformation of media into a multi-platform and multi-dimensional enterprise. The transition from a traditional print daily to a robust digital presence was smooth because of his foresight. Today, Daily Excelsior is relied upon not just for regional reporting but also for accurate national coverage-a feat made possible by the solid groundwork laid by S.D. Rohmetra.
The principles he stood for-dignity of labour, sincerity in action, and devotion to cause-are deeply embedded in the institution he created. His consistent inputs, his measured editorial judgement, and his faith in journalistic discipline continue to guide us, even in his absence. Although he is not physically present, his values, spirit, and teachings continue to live on. The saplings of discipline and purpose that he planted in each of us have now grown into strong and deep-rooted trees. The way he led Daily Excelsior-with vision, grit, and heart-is a story in itself. His ability to balance editorial independence with social sensitivity, nationalism with objectivity, and tradition with innovation was unparalleled.
Today, as we honour his memory, we also recommit ourselves to the path he charted. We pledge to carry forward the legacy of integrity, resilience, and service that he left behind. Every edition of Daily Excelsior, every breaking story, every investigative report, and every editorial column bears his imprint. He built more than a newspaper-he built an institution, a mission, and a family. S.D. Rohmetra’s story is not just of one man-it is of a movement he created, of values he instilled, and of generations he inspired. We are eternally grateful to our loyal readers, supporters, and colleagues who continue to place their trust in us-trust built upon the foundation he laid. As we bow our heads in his memory today, we also lift our eyes to the horizon he once envisioned-a world informed by truth, guided by ethics, and strengthened by the unswerving light of fearless journalism. His mission lives on.
