Highway to Death

Sir
The horrifying trail of accidents on roads throughout the length and breadth of J&K State continues unabated but that does not create any ripple in the corridors of power. At least the way in which the accidents are treated as a routine affair by one and all in the administration suggest nothing but their indifferent attitude towards the citizens. Not to talk of measures to contain ever increasing death toll with passenger and private vehicles rolling down into gorges along the killer roads of J&K State particularly Jammu Srinagar National Highway, Batote-Kishtwar and Doda-Bhaderwah road. The Keshwan Kishtwar accident is horrifying one where 35 people lost their lives and more than 21 people got injured .The authorities have completely failed to prevent mishaps even on account of careless driving in the urban areas. As roads are considered as the arteries connecting people with people but in the present scenario that arteries are witnessing injuried person at one place and dead at other places. If a comparative study of militancy and road death is taken into account more deaths have occured due to accidents than due to militancy since 1990 .Consequently the people are losing the near and dear ones. The main cause behind the road accidents particularly in our Chenab Valley and Kishtwar is rash and negligent driving ,use of alcohol while driving ,use of mobile phones by driver, overloading and dilapidated conditions of roads.Reasons have long been identified by the successive regimes yet the remedy is nowhere in sight till date.
