Highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir closed due to snow

SRINAGAR :  The national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley, has been closed due to snowfall and slippery road conditions.    “We have closed the highway because of snowfall due to which the road has become slippery,” a traffic police official told UNI.
He said the highway between Sonamarg-Zojila-Meenmarg experienced snowfall last evening.
Due to below freezing temperature, the road has become slippery, he said, adding that the highway was closed as a precautionary measure.
However, he said, the highway remained closed for winter months due to heavy snowfall. But announcement will be made only after taking into consideration the road condition and  snowfall.
Meanwhile, official sources said hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, are stranded on either side of the Zojila pass.
Oil tankers and trucks, carrying essentials for Ladakh region were stranded on this side of the pass while those coming from different parts of the Ladakh region were stopped at Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia.
