JAMMU, Oct 27: Reiterating the composite socio-cultural heritage of Jammu which is a hallmark of winter capital’s literary tradition, Writers’ Forum Jammu, organized a multilingual short story session at the K L Saigal Hall, here today.
Marked by the high literary merit the short story writers from four languages who shared the dais today included Sunil Sharma, Dogri, Gurdeep Kaur, Punjabi, Jogita Yadav, Hindi and Sham Sunder Anand Lehar, Urdu.
Today’s programme very well conducted by Raj Kumar Chandan, started with poet-writer Sunil Sharma reading his Dogri short story titled ‘Verinag Jadoon Jhelum Hoi Gaya’-‘When Verinag turned into Jhelum’, was an artistic first person narrative of the protagonist wishing that very soon the inhabitants of the Valley would rediscover the truth of their roots and live a peaceful life.
Gurpreet Kaur’s story ‘Janwar’, a sensitive take upon the general social bias about female child, was beautifully woven around the plot of sudden arrival of a ‘kitten’ in a family and how the animal out of filial affections leads the lady of the house to its starved cat mother.
Yuva Gyanpeeth awardee, Yogita Yadav’s Hindi story ‘Bheria’-‘The Wolf’, was the pick of the session for its symbolic account of pervert male psyche leading to predatory behavior which continue to victimized females in homes and the society in myriad ways and disguises. Sham Sunder Anand Lehar’s Urdu story ‘Vote Bank’ was a satirical representation of the degradation of the political class for winning votes.
Today’s program concluded with critical appreciation of the works by the members of the presidium which included, the chief guest Prof Riyaz Ahmed, Post-Graduate Department of Urdu, University of Jammu and guests of honour Prof Satya Pal Srivatsya, Hardayal Singh Rehbar and Pritpal Singh Betab, convener of Writers’ Forum. Well known Hindi poet Sudhir Mahajan presented vote of thanks.
