Helping poor unmarried girls

Sir,
It is indeed heartening to read that the State Cabinet has,in a landmark decision, accorded sanction to roll out of two major programmes -State Marriage Assistance and Hunnar Schemes for the poor unmarried girls of our state. It is shocking that about four lakh poor girls who have crossed forty years of age have been identified as unmarried by the Social Welfare Department. It is a harsh reality that many girls living Below Poverty Line donot find suitable partners due to financial reasons and cross their marriageable age.The decision of the Government to provide one time financial assistance of Rs 25000 and five gm. of gold to the prospective beneficiary girl who has attained 18 years of age and whose name figures in the survey available with the concerned DDCs and DSWOs,will go a long way in providing them much needed support and thus, enable them to lead an honourable life. The other scheme which is likely to benefit thousands of poor girls is ‘Hunnar’ which will help them to develop their skill and thus, earn their livelihood to lead a better life.Such girls need to be provided training in vocations such as tailoring, knitting, weaving and other such trades to enable them to be self reliant and thus, live a dignified life in the society.Apart from the government’s support,NGOs, social and religious organisations too must come forward and help such girls as have been living in abject poverty and supplement the government’s efforts in providing them financial and other support to better their life and enable them to live an honourable life in the society.
Yours etc…..
Ashok Sharma,
Udhampur
