Heaven for smugglers

Important and highly damaging fallout of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir State is that fake currency notes and narcotics are smuggled into the State with the tacit purpose of disrupting economy and spoiling the youth. Over last three years more than 1.6 crore worth fake currency notes have been seized by the police and vigilance agencies. This fake currency is manufactured in Pakistan and the story of how ISI has been able to do it is already known to everybody. A nexus has come into existence through which fake currency notes are circulated. Although anti smuggling agencies and the Reserve Bank of India, both have taken a number of precautionary measures to check the clandestine practice yet much remains to be done in the matter. We are aware that in the case of fake currency and narcotic smuggling FIRs have been registered and some indicted persons have been arrested, yet there is no clear report about the punishment given to them. Apparently, they are prosecuted under the law of the land. That is all right but what would deter others from pursuing these illegal and immoral activities is the exemplary punishment to be given to them. Our legal system may be comprehensive but it entails lengthy and complicated procedure. When a case is dragged on for years together, it loses it edge and then the culprits make a case of victimization.
