JAMMU, May 13: The Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare headed by Ghulam Nabi Azad today brought Indira Gandhi Government Dental College (IGGDC), Jammu under ‘recognized category’.
The Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in New Delhi issued a notification to this effect in consultations with the Dental Council of India.
“The Government of India on the recommendation of Dental Council of India, New Delhi vide notification No. V 12017/14/2004-DE has recognized the IGGDC. The college has now been brought from approved to recognized status,’’ official sources said.
Mr Azad, a former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, and Medical Education Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din had taken the initiative for recognition of the Dental College of Jammu, which had been a major demand of the people of Jammu especially the BDS students.
Following the Government notification, the degrees issued by the University of Jammu to the students of Indira Gandhi Government Dental College, Jammu would carry the degree Bachelor of Dental Surgery i.e. BDS, University of Jammu, the notification issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
The IGGDC was established in 2004 with intake capacity of 20 students per year. The initial three batches of the college including 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 with intake capacity of 20 students were initially regularized and thereafter recognized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India on the recommendations of the Dental Council of India.
Thereafter, the intake capacity of the college was increased from 20 to 50 seats per year. The Dental Council of India conducted regular inspections of the college every year. The college was on approved status till now except the initial three batches.
Sources said the Dental Council of India after their annual inspections regularly had been pointing out some deficiencies with respect to infrastructure, machinery, equipment and faculty, which were fulfilled timely with the efforts of the State Government.
Presently, the college has been running 9 departments, which were providing specialized orodental health care treatment to the people of the State.
The Departments included Oral Medicine and Radiology, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics and Dental Materials, Pedodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Public Health Dentistry and Oral Pathology and Dental Histology.
“All the departments possessed modern machinery and equipments as per the requirement of Dental Council of India. Round the clock emergency services are being provided to the needy patients in the hospital,’’ sources said.
The new building of the Indira Gandhi Government Dental College/Hospital is under construction for which the Government has sanctioned funds amounting to Rs 92.38 crores under Plan scheme.
