HC seeks report on rehabilitation of stone quarry operators

Srinagar, Oct 10: High Court sought status report from the Government with regard to rehabilitation of stone quarrying operators who have been dislocated and notifying of draft rules within a time bound period.
Division Bench of Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice Tashi Rabstan, in a PIL regarding ban on stone quarrying in and around forest land, directed the authorities to file the latest status report as to how those persons who are affected by stopping of stone quarries are rehabilitated within three weeks with the observation that the said time would be ‘last and final opportunity’ for the Government for formulating the rehabilitation policy and draft rules.
The three weeks deadline has been granted after the counsel submitted that they (Government) are lingering the process by taking time on one pretext or the other and are not coming in tune with the court direction passed from time to time.
Authorities in its earlier report had submitted that the steps for re-submitting the draft rules to the Minister of State for Industries and Commerce for his approval ‘but what steps have been taken thereafter’ is not brought to the notice of the court, said the petitioner.
