NEW DELHI, May 29: The Delhi High Court today issued notices to the Army chief on a petition filed by former Lt General Tejinder Singh alleging that no action was taken against former Army chief General V K Singh and four others for defamation.
The petitioner sought contempt proceedings against the Indian Army chief General Bikram Singh as he did not comply with court’s earlier order for taking disciplinary action against the former Army chief and four others for exceeding their jurisdiction to fame him.
Justice GS Sistani issued contempt notice to Army chief and also to former defense secretary Shashi Kant Sharma for their failure to adhere to the court orders and take action against V K Singh and four others for exceeding their jurisdiction and defamed Lt General (Retd) Tejinder Singh.
The court asked the respondents to reply as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them for contempt of court and asked them to file their response by Septemeber 9.
The petitioner in his petition said the HC had earlier on May 24 had directed that disciplinary action can be taken against the former Army chief and four others but no action has been taken so far.
The court had earlier refused to direct the Government to withdraw the March 5, 2013 press release in which former Army chief General accused Mr Tejinder Singh of offering him bribe.
The petitioner had claimed that the then Army chief and four other officers exceeded their jurisdiction and defamed him of taking bribe.
The petitioner sought initiation of criminal or civil proceedings against Defence Minister A K Antony, the Army chief and the former defence secretary, for not complying with the court’s earlier order. (UNI)
