HC directs I&FC, SMC for treatment of industrial waste in Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 25: High Court has directed the I&FC Department and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to take steps in view of recommendation made by Pollution Control Board relating to treatment of effluents emitted by Industrial Units into a water body situated in outskirts of Srinagar.
The Pollution Control Board through its joint report filed by its Regional Director and District Officer made certain recommendation before the court for treatment of effluents emitted by the Industrial Units into the water body.
Court after taking into consideration those recommendations made by PCB directed the I&FC and SMC to take steps and report Action Taken to the court. The PCB has recommended that a CETP needs to be made operational immediately and the treated water needs to be channelized for irrigation purposes without feeding it to Sikh Nambal.
The PCB further suggested that the drains need to be cleaned and cleared regularly by SIDCO to ward off blockage and chocking, resulting in contamination of effluent and waste water. The solid waste generated, PCB recommended should be channelized to some Municipal Body for scientific disposal.
Court said the joint report of PCB be sent to I&FC as well as SMC for compliance. Court has appointed advocate Faisal Qadri as amicus to the matter and asked the registry to furnish a complete paper book to him.
It was a representation addressed to Chief Justice of High Court by the Inhabitants of Hill View Colony, Old Air Field Road, Wanbal Rangreth Gagoo village and Wawoosa has been treated as PIL which complains the worst situation of a water body due to effluents emitted by the industrial units directly into the water body situated in the area.
Court in view of the nature of grievance as projected in the representation by the inhabitants directed all these officials to conduct regular inspection of the Colony and Industry in question and place an action taken report before the court.
