HC directs Govt to install treatment plants at Achan

SRINAGAR, Aug 30: Stating that situation at Achan dumping site is “alarming”, the  High Court has directed the Government to install two additional leachate treatment plants for larger public interest.
A Division bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur said the Chief Secretary would be fully competent in the process of installing the treatment plants.
The bench during the hearing of the case observed that it is “immediate necessity to deal with the situation.”
During hearing, Economic Reconstruction Agency admitted before the court about the bad stench emanating from the site.
The court observed the situation at the site calls for “immediate remedy” after ERA officials “conceded to the court the stench emanating form the site is such a nature, it is not possible to stand in the area.”
The court also directed the Public Health Engineering Department to take fresh samples from underground bore well and file status report about it to the court.
PHE Department has informed the court the result of water samples taken from bore well at a depth of 240 feet show that it is not fit for consumption.
The bench directed the department to create awareness about the contaminated water among the public by notifications. “Public notice be issued in the area that water is contaminated and not to consume it to avoid ill health,” the court directed.
